Rolando has deep roots in his Argentine homeland and is proud to represent Bodega Sottano in Ontario for 15 years and counting.
The origin story of Judas Malbec: Known worldwide for its high-quality wines, Bodega Sottano has 20 hectares of vineyards in prestigious Perdriel, Luján de Cuyo, one of the top subregions in the Mendoza, Argentina wine region.
One certain area planted with Malbec yielded particularly outstanding grapes. In 2005, they decided to make a wine using those grapes, obtaining only 500 bottles, which they were reserving for the Sottano family's personal cellar.
However, one of the three Sottano brothers gave a bottle to a good friend of his as a special present, without telling the others. When the friend tried the wine, he called the brothers right away and said, “This is the best Malbec I’ve tried in my life. You cannot just keep this wine for yourselves.”
At first, the other Sottanos were somewhat upset with their brother for ‘betraying’ them by sharing their treasure outside the family. But after giving the matter some thought, they decided that the friend had a point. They called the wine Judas to commemorate the ‘betrayal.’
Of the 500 bottles of that first vintage, 50 bottles stayed in Argentina and 300 bottles were exported to the United States. The remaining 150 bottles of that inaugural vintage were imported to Ontario, repped by our agency.
Subsequent vintages of Judas Malbec have won many awards and consistently high ratings when submitted to competitions and expert tasters such as Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
