Experience six different expressions of Malbec, Argentina's signature grape!
Malbec is the perfect backyard companion as it goes so well with grilled red meats of all kinds and is a good choice for sipping on its own. With this collection, you can compare your tasting experience of one Malbec to another.
Malbecs will vary in complexity and flavor, depending on terroir, climate, age and growing condition of vines, time in oak aging (if any), and time in the bottle. Your experience will also vary according to whether or not you decant and/or let the wine breathe before drinking, serving temperature, and food pairings, if any.
These Malbecs from small, family-owned-and-run producers can be easy drinking and delicious or complex and amazing or anywhere in between. Which one will be your favorite?
ECLIPSE "VIEJA BODEGA" MALBEC 2018 (from Coquimbito, Maipú, an up-and-coming Mendoza subregion
TASTING NOTES: Red colour with violet tones. Aromas of blackberries and red plums on the nose. Sweet, round tannins on the palate. Easy drinking and ready to drink now.
PAIRING: Serve with anything grilled (steak, game, lamb, etc.), beef stew, empanadas, baked beans, mushrooms, and firm, creamy cheeses like Manchego. Tried and liked pairing with vegetarian spring rolls from Costco.
ABITO "LA JUVENTUD" MALBEC 2019 (from Barrancas, Maipú, an up-and-coming Mendoza subregion)
TASTING NOTES: Fruit-forward, very typical Malbec, notable also for its freshness. On the nose it recalls aromas of red and black fruits and dried fruits. There are also notes of white flowers like jasmine and violets. On the palate it is unctuous and friendly, with good acidity, roundness and fullness.
PAIRING: Earthy, tangy, savory dishes like slow-cooked pulled pork, saucy barbecue, mushrooms, sausage with a bit of spiciness, and "mild" chili.
MI TERRUNO "EXPRESION" MALBEC 2018 (from Maipú (up-and-coming) and Tupungato (well-known) Mendoza subregions)
Full ruby red colour with violet hues. Black raspberry and violet aromas are perfectly combined with elegant tannins. Very good persistence.
PAIRING: Ideal to pair with red meats and hard cheeses. Excellent example of the emblematic red variety from Argentina.
SOTTANO MALBEC 2019 (50% from Perdriel, Luján de Cuyo, and 50% from Vista Flores, Valle de Uco, both powerhouse Mendoza subregions)
TASTING NOTES: Gleaming, intense red-violet colour. Complex aroma of ripe red plums and raspberries is enhanced with subtle chocolate and vanilla. On the palate it is well structured, with velvety and elegant tannins and a lingering finish.
PAIRING: Steak, grilled red meat in general, pasta with tomato-based sauce, mushroom risotto, mildly flavored semi-soft cheeses such as Gouda, Havarti, Bel Paese, Port Salut, Saint Paulin, or Brie.
MIRAS "CRIANZA" MALBEC 2014 (from General Roca in the well-known Río Negro Upper Valley wine region in Patagonia)
TASTING NOTES: Deep violet red colour with black hues. Fruity aroma with marked presence of ripe black and red fruits such as blackberries, strawberries and raspberries, along with notes of toasted oak, tobacco, chocolate and cassis. On the palate, it is full bodied and unctuous, very engaging and round, with ripe and pleasant tannins.
PAIRING: Excellent pairings include steak and any grilled red meat; burgers with cheese including blue cheese; red meat empanadas; mixed grill (beef, sausage, etc.); roasted lamb; pasta with tomato and beef sauce; pizza with a variety of hearty toppings; and Cajun spiced pumpkin stew.
MI TERRUNO "MAYACABA" MALBEC 2010 (from a 100-year-old vineyard in Perdriel, Luján de Cuyo, a top-tier Mendoza subregion)
TASTING NOTES: Robust garnet colour with purple nuances. Aroma of plums and cherries (typical of the variety) with hints of vanilla and spices as well as smoky and toasted notes. On the palate: Full bodied with concentrated flavours and silky sweet tannins leading to a long and compelling finish.
PAIRING: Superb with grilled red meats, particularly the more tender, rich cuts of beef.
